Dressed in an electric-blue vest and a white fedora, CarlosSantana stopped by Brown Shoe Co.s Clayton headquarters thisafternoon where a small shion show was held in his honor tocelebrate the 10th anniversary of his shoe brand.
So your first question might be: Um, Carlos Santana has awomens shoe line? Yes, indeed he does.
His Carlos by Carlos Santana line is full of vibrant colors –yellows and oranges and pinks — and eye-popping designs (thinkleopard print). And many of them have quite high heels,cheap air ma. platforms,and wedges. (Today, he was wearing sporty white shoes with whatappeared to be no socks.)
Brown Shoe, which also designs a line of shoes for Fergie,launched the legendary musicians shoe brand 10 years ago. And inthe years since, the brand has sold 8 million pairs of shoes andtallied up $400 million in retail sales, according to companyofficials.
A small percentage of the sales go to the Milagro Foundation, acharity that Santana founded with his ex-wife in 1998 that givesgrants to groups around the world working with children. To date,the shoe brand has donated about $2.5 million to thefoundation.
Rick Gelber, the brands general manager, recalled that BrownShoe launched Santanas shoe line soon after his hit album,Supernatural, came out. The shoes are carried in Macys as wellas many independent boutiques and online.
He has transcended the celebrity brand and just become abrand, Gelber said. We established a niche that was high-shiondress shoes and that now has evolved into a whole lifestylebrand.
During the shion show of shoes from his upcoming ll andspring collections, Santana held the hand of his wife, CindyBlackman, whom he married last year. He bopped along to the music,which he knew well because, of course, it was his own.
Afterwards, he thanked Brown Shoe employees for their work andpassion. He said he wants to take Blackman to Porto Allegre inBrazil, where many of his shoes are made. He visited some of thosectories several years ago when he was on tour there.
When we went there, the floor was so pristine and clean, hesaid proudly.
You hear a lot of horror stories about sweatshops, he said. Butit was completely the opposite.
With so much fear in the world today, he said he wants to makewomen happy with his shoes.
When you turn to joy, somehow fear becomes like fog in SanFrancisco where you cant see your nose at 6 oclock in themorning, he said. But by 12 oclock, the sky is blue.
Theres nothing more attractive in a woman than confidence, hesaid.
When I see ladies walk with confidence in these shoes, itsalmost like they turn into an actress, he said.
He compared it to the transformation that Michael Jackson madewhen he was on stage. Once he crossed onto the stage, he channeledthe likes of James Brown to Marcel Marceau to Fred Astaire, Santanasaid.
When you wake up in the morning, its OK to enter intocharacter if you dont like who are right now — if youre notcomfortable in your own skin, he said. You need to enter into –its not king it — but entering into character.
Santana stuck around for a bit to take pictures with employeesand to sign some guitars, too. He performs tonight at the Fox.

Reporter Erin Dietrich works on a shoe for the Womens ResourceCenters A Walk in Their Shoes project to bring awareness to theissue of domestic violence.
Shoe prowess an impartion of ppersonal, jumpinge a？womens shoes,A tiny, child-sized sneaker, dirty and worn, is stuffed with arainbow of bright crayons. A heavy, black boot is stuck withband-aids, and packed with drug paraphernalia, nails andspikes.
Each shoe created for the Tillamook County Womens ResourceCenter A Walk in Their Shoes community project tells a verypersonal story about a life touched by domestic or ualviolence.
A dozen or so men and women showed up to decorate shoes duringthe Sept. 1, where an array donated art supplies and shoes wereavailable.
It makes a living statement women, children, men, there aremany, many victims, said Terri Neimann, TCWRC preventioncoordinator. It also comes from the proverb, dont judge a personuntil you walk a mile in their shoes.
The shoes, along with artists statements, will be displayed inhonor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month adidas casua, observed annually inOctober.
Shoes can still be dropped off or decorated at the Center,located at 1902 2nd St. in Tillamook, or can be submitted, untilSept. 23, when they will be moved to the Bay City Arts Center fordisplay throughout the month of October.

Mercy Health Center Auxiliary will host a Shoe Roads Productions shoe sale from 12:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. Monday, April 25, and 6 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, in the Mercy Health Center main lobby.Both womens and mens shoes will be available in a large variety of sizes. Cash, checks and credit cards will be accepted. For Mercy Health Center employees, payroll deductions are also available.Auxiliary members expanded hours of the sale to allow for community members, as well as early and late shift workers to participate, a news release said.Shoe Roads Productions in a division of Lauries Shoes and carries popular brands such as Klogs, Dansko, Birkenstock, Algeria and seasonal shoes. The Mercy Health Center Auxiliary is a volunteer organization that raises money to benefwomens shoesit the hospital. Since 2002, Mercy Auxiliary has donated over $300,000 to Mercy Health Center for state-of-the-art equipment, supplies and upgrading of services for the patients benefit through vending machine sales, proceeds of sales in the Mercy Market Place gift shop and other specialty sales. Auxiliary members also pay annual membership fees, the release said.Most recently, the organization donated $60,000 to the Mercy Health Center Foundation for the Mercy Cancer Care expansion and relocation.
