Home > ETF To Play For Chinas Transformation Into A Consumer-Driven Economy (CHIQ, AAPL, GE, YUM)

nike casualETF To Pplace For Chinas Transmodifyation Into A C,Tony Sagami:  It is an old statistic but one that investors should never forget: Roughly 70% of the U.S. economy is comprised of consumer spending. That is the money that you and I spend at the grocery store, the shopping mall, at car dealerships, and at our vorite restaurants.

The problem for the U.S. economy is that we arent spending much.

Retail sales in June were $387.8 billion, according to the Commerce Department. Thats a pathetic 0.1% increase from the previous month.

nike casual shoesSix of 13 major categories showed a decline in sales last month. Gas stations led the way, lling 1.3% furniture/home furnishing, dropping by 0.8% leisure goods (sporting, book, music stores), decreasing by 0.7% and restaurants, losing 0.4%.

That lack of spending is the result of a combination of weak housing prices and the unemployment rate remaining stubbornly above 9%.

The latest Bloomberg Consumer Comfort Index shows that only 8% of Americans characterized the economy as positive. Even Ben Bernanke recently admitted to the Senate Banking Committee that confidence is pretty low among consumers.

The Wall Street crowd and CNBC experts keep telling you that things are going to get better, but I sure dont see it.

But maybe Im wrong. Maybe the Obama administration will stop spending money it doesnt have, Ben Bernanke will stop printing money, and the U.S. economy will bounce like a Super Ball.

The Asian Investment No-Brainer

The way I look at it, you can cross your fingers and hope that our consumer-lead economy rebounds OR you can invest someplace where the consumers are happy, confident and spending.

Im talking about Asia in general and China is particular.

Here is a short video clip I took last week at the downtown Kuala Lumpur Sogo store, a popular, Asian high-end department store. As you can see, it is PACKED with shoppers!

That same spendathon can be found all over Asia, including China.

FACT: Chinas retail sales increased 16.8% in the first six months of 2011 and by 17.7% in the month of June.

There is simply no comparison to the measly 0.1% increase in the United States. Obama and Bernanke would do CARTWHEELS if the United States were enjoying a fraction of that prosperity.

The confirming signs of prosperity in China are easy to find. In just the last couple of days:

Sure Sign 1: Apple has been on a big-time roll, and a large part of its success is booming sales in China. Apple just reported that its greater China (China + Hong Kong + Taiwan) sales increased by more than 600% in the last quarter to $3.3 billion.

Heres what Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) COO Tim Cook said about his companys sales in China:

China was very key to results. The region now contributes roughly 13.3% of Apples total third-quarter revenue of $28.57 billion, compared to less than 4% in the year ago quarter.

This has been a substantial opportunity for Apple, and I firmly believe we are just scratching the suce right now.

Sure Sign 2: CapitaMalls, the retail arm of Southeast Asias biggest developer CapitaLand, reported a 100% increase in quarterly profits, jumping from $82.1 million (Singapore dollars) to $164.9 million. How? From rising traffic and sales at its shopping malls in China.

Sure Sign 3: Luxury goods company Burberry reported a 34% sales increase for its most recent quarter thanks to a 60% jump in Asia-Pacific sales. Burberry opened 50 new retail stores in China in the last 12 months.

Sure Sign 4: General Motors (NYSE:GE) reported a new all-time high of 1.27 million autos sold in China for the first six months of this year.

Sure Sign 5: Yum! Brands (NYSE:YUM), the operator of Pizza Hut and KFC restaurants, has more than 18,000 locations outside the United States.

The company attributed its 18% increase in China sales as the reason it beat the pants off of its quarterly profit forecasts. Business in China is so good that Yum! Brands opened 90 new restaurants in the last 90 days.

I could tick off another dozen examples, but I think you get the point. More importantly, the strong consumer spending in China, if anything, is going to get even better.

A recent Boston Consulting Group report forecasts Chinas shion market to triple in size to more than $200 BILLION over the next 10 years.

Per capita consumer spending in China is still in the early part of the penetration curve compared with that in mature markets, giving China the potential to become an even more significant shion market, the report said.

Chinas Consumer Revolution Isnt An Accident

The Chinese economy is undergoing an intentional MONUMENTAL transformation from an export-dependent manucturer of low-margin trinkets to a consumption-driven economy powered by its own internal growth.

Chinas leaders dont like being dependent on the west for its exports, so it is intentionally focusing on growing its internal domestic demand.

Chinas 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015) prioritized more equitable wealth distribution, increased domestic consumption, improved social infrastructure, and social safety nets. The plan is representative of Chinas efforts to shift its emphasis toward domestic consumption.

You see, wages in China have been growing by around 12% a year in real terms over the last decade. That is Chinese exports more expensive, especially compared to other lower-wage Asian neighbors like Vietnam and Cambodia.

Just like the United States lost ctories to lower-wage China, China is now losing some of that low-margin, labor-intensive, export-oriented manucturing that had been the base of its economic growth over the last 20 years.

I saw the proof with my own eyes during my last visit to Yue Yuen Industrial Holdings, the largest branded athletic shoe manucturer in the world. It produces tennis and casual shoes for Nike, Adidas, Reebok, Asics, New Balance, Rockport, Timberland, and Puma.

I learned that this Chinese company was moving some of its manucturing cilities to Vietnam to save on labor costs.

The Wall Street Crowd Doesnt Get It

The Wall Street crowd doesnt get this shift. For example, when the HSBC China Manucturing Purchasing Managers Index fell to 48.9 in July, my clueless competitors assumed that this was a sure sign that the Chinese economy was headed for a painful ll.

Wrong! The manucturing sector is slowing down, but the consumer sector is more than up the difference. If you understand that yet key concept, you wont have any trouble finding great stocks to invest in.

What you need to do is get long whatever the Chinese are buying. And when it comes to Chinese consumers, all it takes is a walk down any major street to see whats hot.

I see more Louis Vuitton handbags in Beijing than I do in Boston. I see more Apple iPhones glued to ears in Shanghai than in Seattle. And I see more customers lined up at KFC stores in Hong Kong than in Houston.

Those are just a few of the examples of western companies that are doing gangbuster business in Asia and carting wheelbarrows of profits to the bank.

If youre more of an exchange traded fund (ETF) kind of investor, heres one worth your consideration: The Global X China Consumer ETF (NYSE:CHIQ). CHIQ is packed with Chinas most successful retailers.

Dont make the mistake of investing in any stocks that are dependent on the U.S. consumer to bail them out. It aint going to happen.

What you need to do is invest where the shopping malls are packed and the consumers are confident, happy, and spending. That, my friend, is across the Pacific Ocean.

Best wishes,

nike casualThe thrstricken of newborn footgears

Scene from the television series Sex In The City. Carrie Bradshaw ( Sarah Jessica Parker ) unpacks a pair of Manolo Blahnik shoes. Photo / Supplied.

nike casualThe thrstricken of newborn footgears,From Cinderella to Carrie Bradshaw, every girl knows the thrill of new shoes is as good as lling in love. Louboutins or Havaianas? Bay shoe lovers come out of the closet with shoes ready to strut all terrains – from bush to beach to Bayir, finds Annemarie Quill

Give a&160;girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world. Fashion icon Marilyn Monroe nailed the mythical status of a great pair of shoes. More than just an accessory, shoes have the power to make you feel confident, taller and thinner. Ever since Imelda Marcos, the world has been on shoe watch. In Sex and the City, Carrie Bradshaw not only got her man after years of heartbreak, but a shoe closet the size of a bedroom.

Inspired by the scene, a New York businessman hired the movies set designer to replicate the closet for his wifes huge shoe collection.

The Global Financial Crisis might have knocked our socks off, but not our shoes. Late last year Shoe Galleries opened in Londons Selfridges as the worlds biggest shoe department, stocking 55,000 shoes across a vast 3252m2.

Shoes are higher and more outrageous than ever before. Pregnancy didnt stop Victoria Beckham donning sky-high Christian Louboutins. At the Cannes film festival, model du jour Anja Rubik had diamonds on the soles of her shoes, stepping out in £125,000 (NZ$240,584) pink satin sandals.

As for Lady Gaga – her gravity-defying footwear reminds us that shoes are not just accessories, but works of art.

Here in New Zealand, even for the average woman, 50 pairs plus and daring styles are becoming the norm. indulge steps out with three local shoe-aholics.

Miranda Cobb – Owner Evolution Clothing

I own about 65 pairs of shoes, and I usually work my outfit around the shoes. I have always loved shoes. When I was 17 I saved for ages for an amazing pair of boots from WildPair. They were $600!

The shoes I am most found in at the moment are leopard print wooden clog heels. I love winter shion for all the amazing boots and shoe boots but I am also addicted to strappy sandals and wedges in summer.

I cannot wait for our summer collection and have my eye on a totally insane pair from sevendeadlysins. I am already planning outfits around them. I think wedges and chunky heels will last throughout summer, and we will still see wedges and ankle booties next winter.

The highest heel I own is about 10-12cm but they are deceiving as they have a huge platform so theyre actually quite comfy. I also have a trusty pair of gumboots that come out every winter when I watch my son play soccer. But I do draw the line at crocs!

For me,Iceland Review?best casual. the perfect capsule footwear collection would be a classic black stiletto, a flat ankle boot, a leather knee-high boot, white canvas shoe, strappy sandal, a pair of jandals and anything with a fun animal print.

Favourite shoes? Christian Louboutin. Timeless style.

Kelly Barriball – Owner of online vintage store

I begged my mum for a pair of pink jellies when I was five. My style has changed a bit since those coveted jellies but I still know exactly what I want when it comes to shoes. I start with my shoes when getting dressed and work my way up.

I like to wear heels most days. I tend to wear black and almost always wear a wedge. I have about six pairs on high rotation including my vourite black Chaos & Harmony peep-toe wedges, a suede and leather pair of Saben Says wedge boots and a pair of suede ankle boots that I got for a steal.

My weekends are spent in one of two pairs of trusty Chuck Taylors. During the summer I live in Havaianas.

I am currently lusting over another pair of wedges, this time grey suede by Acne. Im also hunting a pair of Cherry Doc Martens. Ive recently seen a sneak peak of Chaos & Harmonys summer collection and have managed to decrease my wishlist down to just two pairs.

Chaos & Harmony have nailed creating beautiful, interesting but wearable shoes. They are so damn comfortable, regardless of the ct that some pairs have a heel of more than 5cm.

I have a handful of vintage vourites including a pair of flat black leather ankle boots that I have absolutely thrashed and two amazing pairs of heels that used to belong to my gran. She bought them in London during the 70s.

Im always on the hunt for good vintage shoes for my online store. Sometimes its just too hard to part with them so they accidentally end up in my wardrobe.

Rebecca Anderson – Shoe designer, Chaos and Harmony

Naturally being a shoe designer my wardrobe is vast. With just over 50 pairs I usually choose shoes before an outfit, but if Im feeling inspired or I find a new piece of clothing, I will work around that. You should never treat shoes as an after-thought. They can make or break an outfit.

Most of the shoes I own are from Chaos & Harmony collections although I do have an affinity with sneakers. Theres nothing too crazy in my shoe wardrobe, just amazing designs that make a statement.

High heels give length to your legs. The highest heel I would wear would be 10-11cm heel height. My vourite shoes at the moment are platforms – I am wearing a lot of the Mishka boots from our autumn/winter 2011 collection.

I also love the In the Parlour wedges, and our Empire boots, which is an easy little laceup ankle boot.

Detailed socks with ankle boots are so fun to wear. I recently purchased some cute socks with a frill on them from American Apparel, they work really well with our shoes.

While high heels are great, I do wear casual shoes too. Im a Converse and Nike n. I just stocked up on a bunch of sneakers while in the US recently.

Gumboots are a must for the parents rm, and as we live at the Mount, jandals are a no-brainer.

Trends for spring/summer show that platforms are still strong. Flatforms are the latest progression in statement shoes, so easy to wear and give you great height. Ankle boots will last through to next winter with lots of different heel heights. We will also see mid-calf boots too, and a few points starting to trickle in.

For me, the perfect capsule footwear collection would be a range of heights of heels, both mid and high ankle boots with a touch of colour. It would have to include some lavender Chuck Taylor high tops ( I have some and I love them); plus our new Betty shoes in tan from our summer collection coming in August, and a pair of Stella velvet heeled sandals from our winter collection.

My vourite shoe designer is Camilla Skovgaard – her shoes are amazing. The detail is precise and distinct. In terms of my shoe icons, Taylor Tomasi Hill (accessories editor at Marie Claire) has great style and amazing shoes. She has a pair of Studded Kicks by Christian Louboutin.

I dont have to hide my shoe purchases from my hubby as he loves shoes as much as I do. We have a mutual shoe understanding.

nike casualDamien Wilrelations had stealers by the neartful

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

By Damien Wilkins

For the AJC

I’ve always been a sneaker freak. I had a cousin who could dress like a bum, but his sneakers were always fresh and new. I adopted that from him.

nike casualDamien Wilrelations had stealers by the neartful,Of the 300 pairs I’ve collected the past three years, about 75 are Nike Air Force Ones. I have all the Air Maxes since 1995. I have every pair of Jordans, even some I didn’t like. I even have some casual low-top nike casual shoesJordans not even for basketball.

Shell-toes are some of my vorites, though they can get dirty quick. I’ve got high-top Adidas, old school retro Adidas, Chuck Taylors — man comfortable, the list goes on and on.

I’ve got some unusual colors. Some make no sense. I’ve got a pair of Adidas that are turquoise, yellow, black and gray. I wore those with jeans once.

My teammates know I never wear the same shoe more than three or four games. To break them in, I wear them in practice the day before a game and in the pre-game shootaround.

I shop online at sites like sneakether.com or Nike.com. I also shop in downtown Atlanta at Walter’s. I end up buying what’s new and two more of something else.

I have a closet that is all sneakers, and I can’t close the door. I have to step on shoes to get to shoes. In my bedroom I have another custom closet where I can stack the shoes.

I have collectible shoes that have never been worn, like my vorite, the Air Jordan I, the style he wore when he dropped 63 on the Celtics in the 1983 playoffs. Those were banned. Every time he wore black and red, he was fined $5,000, so Nike had to make him a version with a white base.

I’ve been looking to get my hands on the Air Jordan XI, in the original white and black, with patent leather around the bottom. Those are off the chain.

When I run out of closet space, I end up giving 150 pairs of shoes to my friends who wear my size. If I haven’t worn a pair in months and have no plans to wear them again, I put them in the throw-out collection. In the summer, my friends call and say, Hey, have you cleaned out your closet yet? They know they’ll go away with bags of sneakers.

As soon as I clean out the closets, I am running out of room again. That’s how st I collect shoes.
