It’s getting to be that time of year – the time that all Houstonians seem to simultaneously curse and embrace – summer. Each year, I notice that Houston men become even more willing to sacrifice style for comfort as temperatures rise. But fortunately, these two things do not have to be mutually exclusive. Here’s what you need to know to stay stylish and comfortable in the Houston heat:

During the cooler months, it’s easier to add uniqueness to your look by accessorizing and layering. But in a sea of short sleeve shirts and jeans, it can be a bit more challenging to stand out from the crowd. Thus, it’s important to incorporate few bold pieces into your wardrobe. But remember to keep your outfit in balance.
Really want to wear a pair of teal shorts? That’s fine, but pair with them a basic shirt. Choose a few statement pieces and don’t wear all of them at the same time.
Know when shorts and flip-flops are appropriate
Designer Tom Ford has been gaining a lot of attention recently for stating in AnOther Man Magazine that a man should never wear shorts in the city. Ford, who is perhaps most well-known for his stint as creative director at Gucci in the &39;90s, went on to say that Flip-flops and shorts in the city are never appropriate. Shorts should only be worn on the tennis court or on the beach.
Obviously, Mr. Ford hasn’t spent much time in Houston.
However, I think he has a valid point. Shorts and flip-flops are great for the beach and fine for running around town on the weekend. But guys, if you’re going to a moderately upscale restaurant ormen casual shoes bar, at least put on a pair of jeans.
Believe me – I realize that Houston is a casual city, and I rarely get more dressed up than jeans and a blazer. However, there’s just something about wearing jeans and flip-flops at dinner that says you don’t care, and that’s not a good look. And I shouldn’t even have to tell you that neither are acceptable for work – ever.
Invest in some high-quality Tees
Don’t worry, I’m not asking you to ditch the T-shirts, too. I’m generally more of a button down guy, but in July and August, I succumb to the comfort of lightweight tees. Before the summer starts, I would recommend that you stock up on some basic colors in crewneck and v-neck styles. It’s important that you find some that are thick enough and fit well enough to not look like undershirts, and durable enough to withstand the beating that you’ll probably put them through. Some of the best ones I’ve found are made by L.A.-based designer James Perse, and they’re available at Houston’s own Mortar.
Madras is your friend
More often that not, If I need to wear a button down in the summer months, I reach for one made of a lightweight cotton, like Madras. It&39;s exceptionally lightweight and often comes in fun plaids that can be dressed up or down. Some of the best ones that I’ve seen this season are from an exclusive collaboration that GantRugger did with Barneys. Unfortunately, we lost our Co-Op a few months ago, but you can still get them online.
Everyone needs a pair of white canvas sneakers
A pair of white canvas sneakers should be a summer staple for every guy: They’re lightweight, and more often than not, inexpensive enough to replace a couple of times. They can be worn with jeans, shorts and chinos alike. Some of my vorites include Vans, Spring Courts, Tretorns, Supergas and Jack Purcells. I’m also particularly satisfied with my latest shoe purchase: a pair of natural Venice Surf & Court sneakers from Billy Reid’s recent collaboration with K-Swiss. Whichever shoes you elect to go with, don’t be afraid to get them dirty, and try wearing them sans socks for an extra summery look.
Get some chinos that actually fit
Chinos are a great alternative to shorts and jeans when it’s warmer outside. But it’s time to ditch the pair that you bought at the Gap in 1995 – your chinos shouldn’t be excessively baggy. In ct, they should fit on the slimmer side, and have little to no to break. Pair them with a blazer and button down or roll them up with a T-shirt and the aforementioned sneakers to look like all-American badasss Steve McQueen. Unis and Epaulet both make a great pair.
Protect your eyes
I used to be one of those people who protested the idea of investing in sunglasses, as I always lost my cheap ones. But there’s something about spending money that makes you r more protective of vital objects like sunglasses, pens and umbrellas. Not to mention that sunglasses of the drug store variety often do nothing to protect your eyes — and as we all know, the sun can get intense here in H-Town. I’m a big n of my Persols, but Ray-Ban, RetroSuperFuture, Garrett Leight, Moscot and Tom Ford are also worth looking into.
Be prepared – even for rain
It will inevitably rain this summer, and you need to be prepared. A lightweight parka is a great way to look stylish and stay dry. I’m particularly fond of all of the ones Daiki Suzuki at Woolrich Woolen Mills has cranked out this season – Mortarhas a few and Unionmade has many, many more.
Lighten up the watch
If you’re going to shed the bulk off the rest of your wardrobe, you need to do the same for your accessories. A massive, bulky watch looks a bit awkward with a T-shirt. I would recommend going for a , clean ce and pair it with a NATO strap. I’m a big n of the mex military watches at J.Crew. In ct, I wear mine year-round.
Invest in some year-round pieces, too
Speaking of year-round, make sure you focus some of your summer purchasing decisions on versatile pieces. Some things – for example, Hamiltonoxford shirts – work just as well in the winter as they do in the summer, whereas if you buy a hundred Madras shirts, you’ll be in trouble when ll rolls around.
Every guy should have a pair of white canvas sneakers. These new ones from Billy Reid and K-Swiss are ntastic.

A professional wardrobe is a must for new college grads？men casual s,(RNN) – There comes a time in every college student&39;s life when he or she must throw away the torn-up jeans, Greek life shirts and cargo shorts in exchange for skirts, slacks, blazers, dress shoes and heels. This time is best known as graduation day.
While college life was all about independence and individuality, there are more important things to consider the day after you receive that diploma – like getting a job.
Some reports have placed the unemployment rate among those 25 and younger as high as 54 percent.
A recent survey reported by Time.com claims that 85 percent of new grads will move back in with mom and dad post-graduation. That is almost nine out of every 10 new college grads.
One way to distinguish yourself from all those other applicants and interns is step your game up when it comes to dress. It could make the difference between freedom and crashing with the ‘rents.
The best bet for you gentlemen is to find a local clothier and toss those khakis you only wore to church on the weekends when you made it home. The professionals there will be able to measure you for slacks and shirts that fit much better than what you&39;ll find at your average department store.
You&39;re doing yourself a service by going to a professional tailor, said James Hill, co-owner of High Cotton Ties in North Carolina. The extra money you spend to get measured professionally is totally worth it.

Guys, think outside the box and grab some linen pants or a seersucker suit. These items were once wardrobe staples among Southern gentlemen, but their popularity has grown outside the region in recent years.
Linen and seersucker are made of breathable, lightweight materials (usually cotton or wool blend) and are ideal for the hot summer months. They can be found in an assortment of work-acceptable colors.
Linen and tons of color are going to be the trademarks of this spring and summer shion, said McLavy Limited&39;s James Osborn.
Linen and seersucker are an outstanding choice in a more casual work environment, like an advertising agency, or as a top-notch alternative to khakis on casual Friday.
One of the most difficult transitions for many young women is choosing a work place-appropriate wardrobe when they&39;ve spent four years dressing to impress other 20-somethings.
Make the best impression possible by keeping the length of your skirt to just above the knee. Forego the slit, or keep it 4 inches or smaller. If you can see your upper thigh when you sit, your skirt is too short.
Inappropriate outfits are going to garner the wrong type of attention and give the wrong impressions to a possible future employer, said Emmie Henderson, co-owner of the Atlanta, GA, retailer Southern Proper.
Remember, you want the attention focused on your work and not what you decide to wear.
Guys, once you&39;ve picked up a few pairs of wool-blend trousers or chinos, take a look at your footwear. If they are open toe, shabby or appropriate for the gym, take them off.
And never forget this, men: Sandals are for the beach and the boat, not the office.
When looking for a shoe in the workplace, consider the following: Will you be inside or outside most of the time? What&39;s your climate? And never put anything above comfort!
You cannot go wrong with having a black and brown pair of work shoes, but it does depend on your job&39;s setting, Hill said. Some jobs allow jeans for the on-the-go worker, and there are dress shoes out there that look great with jeans.
During the summer, you cannot go wrong with your basic loafers, boat shoes (never to be worn with socks) and white and khaki bucks. The summer is the perfect time to find some winter shoes on sale, so always be on the lookout for duck boots for those rainy, snowy work days.
Any woman knows shoes make up half her arsenal when it comes to standing out and an impression at the workplace or during an interview.
If you want to make a statement and stand out, do it with your shoes, not a tight skirt or low-cut top, Henderson said.
A woman should always wear what she feels most comfortable and confident in, while expressing her personality by spicing it up with some color, prints and brics.
On casual Friday, women have r more options than the guys. Flip-flops are always wrong. Heels, flats or a kitten heel are always fine choices. It&39;s casual Friday; not a barbecue.
Guys, a true dress shirt is not measured in small, medium, or large. Let the clothier measure you for dress shirts, blazers and suits.
Get a nice selection of classic colored shirts and five or six ties to match with them, and a suit, Osborn said. You will keep your look fresh by mix and matching the shirts and ties.
Upon graduation, invest in three suits: Navy, gray and black. Your navy blazer that comes with the suit will be your biggest weapon when dressing for interviews or the workplace.
A navy blazer can be worn with slacks, khakis or jeans on the weekends. Peter Millar, Brooks Brothers and Ralph Lauren all offer affordable, stylish blazers that will last until you get that big promotion.
Every man should have a form-fitting navy blazer, Osborn said. They look great and can be worn year around in the office or out on the town.
Ladies, depending on where you&39;re applying or working, different outfits are appropriate for different settings. Take a look around and take notes from your coworkers on what they are wearing in the work setting.
Better yet, take a look at the person who men casual shoesholds a position you aspire to and dress like her. You want to look the part.
It&39;s your work ethic – not your skin – that should be on display. Choose shirts that keep the goods behind closed doors. Liven up your look with a blazer in a light weight bric in a spring color.
You&39;re going to want all the attention on your work during a presentation, Henderson said, so wear something that will keep coworkers&39; attention on that and not your outfit.
Lastly, there are a couple of things you can keep in your arsenal that have nothing to do with what you&39;re wearing. Always use manners, arrive early and stay late, get your hair cut a week before an important appointment, be confident, listen, and smile.

Young men wear baggy pants with underwear showing; shirt tails out and oversized tennis shoes with shoe laces flapping in the breeze. Young women and girls with too tight pants and spandex tops; assorted jewelry and extreme body piercings. While some would dismiss these as youthful shion trends, it can set the stage for problems when they enter the work force.
Attire may not be a problem for people who work with their hands. However, if you work in an office environment, a restaurant, or high-end clothing store where you meet and service customers, one must dress the part.
A recent article by Karen Michael, president of a Virginia based human resources consulting firm, puts it this way If you can see up it, down or through it, dont wear it. Also, anything that is too trendy, too baggy or too tight is out.
Bottom line, owners and managers should not leave appropriate dress to the imagination of their employees. A formal, written dress code should be established and discussed with both current workers and new hires. It should reflect the image the business wishes the public to see.
Ms. Michael cautions Policies should not be too specific because there is no way to cover every possible situation. A common sense approach is a good start and should include expectations about hair, jewelry, tattoos and piercings.

Total sales increased 0.7 percent to $111.5 million and comparable sales increased 2.9 percent as compared with the fourth quarter of fiscal 2009.
Gross profit margin decreased 100 basis points to 45.4 percent. The decrease was the result of a 150 basis point decrease in merchandise margin, partially offset by a 50 basis point improvement in fixed occupancy costs.
Net income increased to $5.3 million, or $0.11 per diluted share, from net income of $3.6 million, or $0.08 per diluted share.
SG&A expenses, on a dollar basis, decreased 4.7 percent to $41.1 million in the fourth quarter FY men casual shoes2010 as compared to last years fourth quarter.
