‘Adidas ingestd me to clear breadstuffgs to /adidas

Monday, July 11th, 2011

A FORMER football manager has revealed how he was used by Adidas to pay bungs to Welsh rugby legends Barry John and Gareth Edwards during the amateur era.

‘Adidas ingestd me to clear breadstuffgs to /adidas,In his new book,Smoke Signalcasual shoes. Meirion Appleton recalls how the sports firm used him to get envelopes full of cash to Wales&8217; best-known rugby stars of the &8217;70s when they wore the company&8217;s boots.

With the sport still in its amateur days the players were not allowed to accept payments from sponsors.

Appleton, 68, whose book also covers his time running Wales&8217; largest sports shop Chwaraeon Aberystwyth Sports Squash Club in the 1980s, said: &8220;I was one of Adidas&8217; best customers and I can remember receiving a phone call from one of the main men on a Friday morning asking me for a vour. He wanted me to transfer an envelope each to two Welsh players before an international game. They would meet me on the stairs outside the hotel. I agreed and I gave an envelope each to Gareth Edwards and Barry John.&8221;

Appleton recalled how a few weeks later the story broke in the News of the World about the payments made to Edwards and John.

The former Aberystwyth Town and Bangor City manager said it was ridiculous that Wales&8217; biggest sports stars weren&8217;t paid.

Rugby did not become fully professional until 1995 by which time the game&8217;s authorities believed it was the only way to stop the exodus to rugby league and end the &8220;shamateurism&8221; that saw many players receive boot money payments.

Appleton, whose book also touches on how his shop went bust and his marriage to wife Gret later iled, added: &8220;In those days they were filling the Arms Park and getting nothing for it. These people would be multi-millionaires now.&8221;

Appleton, who with ex-wife Gret has two grown-up children Ffion, 38, and Gari, 42, says he later got to know John as the rugby adidasstar became a frequent visitor to his squash courts.

The grandther-of-four also describes his devastation at building up his business only to later go bankrupt.

Appleton, who now works with grassroots organisation the Welsh Football Trust, said: &8220;I&8217;ll never forget that moment in Swansea when I had to put my hand on the Bible and declare that I was bankrupt.&8221;

Appleton managed Aberystwyth through one of the club&8217;s most successful periods between 1981 and 1988 when the side won the Mid-Wales League twice as well as several cup competitions.

A former Aberystwyth midfielder, his book Appy recalls how he later managed Bangor City between 1999 and 2000.

This was less successful than his time at Aberystwyth because the club was in financial difficulties.

Edwards chose not to comment.

Appy, priced at &163;9.95 and published by Y Lol, will be launched on July 13 at 7.30pm in the Marine Hotel, Aberystwyth.

adidasVideo: VJ Behurtingm Talks Recruikeepg at Adidas I

Monday, July 11th, 2011

VJ Beachem continues to play well on the AAU circuit and most recently picked up an offer from Butler. The 6-foot-7 wing forward took the time to discuss his recruitment at the Adidas Invitational where he was watched closely by John Beilein, Lavall Jordan and a host of other coaches.

adidasVideo: VJ Behurtingm Talks Recruikeepg at Adidas I,Full transcript after the jump. Can you just tell us where youre at as a team and how youve progressed from April to July?

I think some people will think this is hard to believe but were still getting better. Were still getting used to each other and, like I said birkenstock ou, were still getting better. I dont want to lose all July, weve just got to come out and play hard.

One of the things you mentioned in the spring was that you needed to work on rebounding. You were very aggressive on the glass here, talk about your progression.

I spent a lot of time being the biggest guy on the floor during June so that made me rebound. Now Im coming out here and I have to rebound to help my team.

Whats it been like having all of the coaches there compared to the spring? how much fun Do you glance over there at all? Yeah, I glance over there quite a bit Id say, but its very fun knowing that those guys are here to see us play. Here to see us do our thing.

Where are you in the process? I would say that its starting to speed up a little bit. After July, I think that it will speed up a little bit more. But Im still taking my time for right now. [August] is probably when Id make my decision. I dont think it would be a whole lot longer before Id make it.

Whats your school list now? Indiana, Butler, Purdue, Notre Dame, Cincinnati, Xavier, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Minnesota, Tennessee, Florida , Stanford.

Are you going to cut it down or just decide when its right? When its right. Whenever I feel its the best thing, and Im comfortable, thats when Id make it.

Do your teammates prod you a little bit one way or another?

Yeah they do. Especially Basil, everytime I see Basil he says VJ, youre going to Purdue right?

Do any schools stick out as a vorite or that are recruiting you the hardest? I wouldnt say I have any vorites but I do have some that stick out. Indiana, Purdue, Butler,Notre Dame, Xavier, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State and I really like Florida even though they are r away.

Does it matter going r away? Of course I would love to go to a place where my parents could see me play all the time but it wouldnt be my number one ctor.

IU enlist Holbaritoneell graphemes in Adidas daytiadidas

Monday, July 11th, 2011

Lawrence Central star Jeremy Hollowell, pictured in a Feb. 15 game against Noblesville, scored 57 points combined in two Adidas Invitational games Friday. / Doug McSchooler / FOR THE STAR

IU enlist Holbaritoneell graphemes in Adidas dayti, adidas,Yogi Ferrell calls future Indiana University teammate Jeremy Hollowell a laid-back type of guy.

Its an accurate assessment. The 6-7 Hollowell rarely shows emotion on or off the basketball court, which has at times earned him a reputation as a talented player who doesnt care enough about reaching his immense potential.

Thats just the way he is, Ferrell said. He always just has that look on his ce. He doesnt smile or nothing.

Hollowell let his play do the talking this week at the Adidas Invitational, going head-to-head against some of the top competition in the country. Though his Indiana Elite/Team Indiana fell 60-58 to New York-based New Heights in the semifinals Saturday morning, Hollowells play throughout the tournament had scouts buzzing and the Indiana ns in attendance salivating.

In a Friday game against the Compton Magic, Hollowell took over late in adidasthe game and finished with 29 points, offsetting a 46-point explosion from standout Magic guard Gabe York. Later in the day, Hollowell scored 28 points in a close quarterfinal win over the Houston Defenders.

But it went beyond the numbers for Hollowell. He showed take over mentality late in games, aggressively attacking the basket and getting to the free throw line, in addition to hitting from beyond the 3-point arc.

Playing against top players, you want to go out and prove yourself and show that you can match up with them, Hollowell said. Theres some pressure out there, really, going against guys who are ranked higher than you or who are supposed to be really good.

Recruiting service rankings, r from an exact science, rate Hollowell a top-100 across the board. Rivals.com slotted him at No. 52 in the 2012 class in its latest rankings, though that is likely to change for the better if he continues this surge in July.

Part of Hollowells effectiveness appeared to be a willingness to play a more physical style, particularly early in games.

Im trying to get to the basket more, he said. A lot of people play the (outside) shot when Im hitting it, so Im trying to attack the basket and get people in foul trouble and get to the free throw line.

Ferrell said Hollowells versatility makes him difficult to defend.

The way he opens it up is that he can post up down low, said Ferrell, the Park Tudor guard. With his shot, that gives him two great things he can do. Hes been the biggest offensive presence for us this week.

Dont expect Hollowells demeanor to change, regardless of how he plays. Thats fine by Ferrell, who expects his teammate to have a big impact early at Indiana.

He may be our biggest offensive threat out there, Ferrell said. What we do here is going to transition when we get to IU.

The Eric Gordon All-Stars 15-and-under team reached the title game of its division Casual ShoesBEpolymerMA, while the Indiana Elite Jazz won the 14-under division.

The Eric Gordon team lost 63-60 to the Louisville Magic in the championship. Kokomos Tayler Persons had 21 points in a losing effort.

The Florida Rams defeated New Heights 89-82 to win the 17s division. New Heights also won the 16s division, beating The Ville, based in Louisville, Ky.

Local teams to reach the semifinals were Indiana Elite/Team Indiana in the 17s; Meanstreets and Indiana Elite Hoopmatics in the 15s; and Spiece Indy Heat in the 14s.

According to tournament officials, head coaches from 70 of the 74 BCS conference schools were in attendance at the tournament, including all 10 in-state Division I schools.

Every head coach from the Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-10 and Southeastern Conference were in attendance. There were more than 400 college coaches total.

There were 150 media credentials issued.

adidasFcountercurrenteriod aftermosterneoon Carrumpusal

Monday, July 11th, 2011

Rashaan Myers recentlycaught up with Kyle Kuric who spoke a little bit about the upcoming season and his shift to walk-on status.

adidasFcountercurrenteriod aftermosterneoon Carrumpusal,I think we can be as good as we want to be. It is very if we put in the work we need to which we are I think we can be as good as we want. I don’t want to say getting out of the first round is our primary focus, but it is a goal, said Kuric. We were right there for the Big East regular season championship and we were right there for the Big East tournament championship with a team everybody didn’t think should be there. So I would say Big East regular season and tournament championship as well as Elite Eight and Final four is where we are setting our sights right now.

One piece of news that caused quite a stir in Red and Black nation was the news that Kuric has been moved to walk-on status though he is a starter and projected team captain for the upcoming season. So the million dollar question is what does Kyle think about being one of the most talented walk-ons in program history?

It all started last year when Coach talked to my parents and he told them he may need my scholarship this year or last year. He said he may or may not need it and if they would have the money to go ahead and pay my way. And they said they did so that is how this whole thing came about. Then they talked to me about it and I told them I didn’t have a problem with it. As r as being viewed as a scholarship player or as a walk on I could really care less. If you see me as a walk on that is your loss and that means you are going to underestimate me, said Kuric.

The LeBron James Skills Academy is currently taking place in Akron, which means thats exactly where one Wolrdwide William Wesley ishanging.

And even though people associated with agents are supposed to be nowhere close to players at an event like this, Wesley has spent the better part of tonight sitting in a chair on the court around Kentucky freshmen Anthony Davis and Michael Gilchrist, and within talking and bumping distance of every high-school prospect in attendance.

Nike officials allow it to happen.

So it happens.

And Wesley must know just how much it agitates the NCAA. For proof, consider that I was standing with the two NCAA officials earlier tonight, just talking and catching up when we were suddenly interrupted by a young man who tapped one of the NCAA officadidasials on the shoulder.

Excuse me, the young man said. Wes wanted me to tell you hello.

What a guy.

If Central Florida wants a new trial in the wrongful death case of Ereck Plancher, its going to cost the school $10 million. Probablynot a smart move.

ESPNs Big East blogcontinues its preseason countdown of unit rankings with linebacker, where Louisville is third.

3. Louisville. The Cardinals lose Brandon Heath and a few other players who brought valuable experience. ButDaniel Brown andDexter Heyman are experienced starters who will anchor this unit. The Cardinals took a hit when Brandon Golson reportedly decided to transfer, so they are going to need to work on some depth.

3. Louisville. If there is one part of the secondary that should be pretty solid, it should be the safeties.Hakeem Smith is one of the best in the league, andShenard Holton had a nice season, too. They lead the team in tackles. Cornerback is the problem area.

Class of 2012 quarterback Austin Appleby, whom Louisville offered a scholarship last month, has committed to Purdue.

Rick Pitino has extended a scholarship offer to class of 2013 point guard Kasey Hill from Florida.

Heres Hill in action as a sophomore:

The new website for mens soccer head coach Ken Lollahas launched.

It was confirmed by Howie Lindsey on Thursday that running backCorvin Lamb is back with the team and enrolled at U of L for the third summer session. Cant have enough depth (or talent) at that position.

Thursday was abig one for the 15-and-under Louisville Magic team coached by Ellis Myles, which went 3-0 and won a super pool at the adidas Invitational.

Among the coaches that watched the Meanstreets game was Louisville’s Rick Pitino and assistant coach Kevin Keatts and assistant coaches from Michigan, Michigan State, Xavier and several others. In the night game, IUPUI head coach Todd Howard, Indiana assistant coaches Tim Buckley and Steve McClain, Purdue assistant coach Micah Shrewsberry, Xavier assistant coach Travis Steele and several others.

It’s been great for the kids, Myles said about the attention.

Ballard’s Quentin Snider and Central’s D’Angelo Russell had sensational games against Meanstreets, while Henry Clay’s Jordan Green and Trey Grundy were both really good in the night game. Trinity’s Craig Owens had a ton of rebounds, while Dixie Heights’ Brandon Hatton has an injured ankle but still was hitting three-pointers.

This area has gone without producing top-level talent for too long. Itll be fun(?) to follow some of these kids for the next couple of years.

And finally, our good friend Mark Ennis pointed out on Twitter yesterday that Steve Kragthorpe will be receiving $1.2 million this season from the University of Louisville. Theres a little salt to dump on that wound that was starting to heal.

really got me pumped because Kyle mentioning Russ Smith putting in work in the gym. I still think that kid has potential. Next, I don&8217;t understand how worldwide wes can be involved in college basketball like he is. As long as his participation is overlooked by the NCAA, UK has a huge advantage in recruiting over every school. Corvin Lamb is in a three way tie (Bridewater, Michaelee Harris) as my breakout performers this year on offense. Cant wait to see that kid truck a LB on his way to the &8220;back of the house!&8221;

bycardchomp on reply

+1. My thoughts exactly. Corvin just might fool a lot of people and Russ Smith has the potential to be a player

The man is a registered agent, WTF?

The NCAA is about as smart and useful as a hand full of dog .

That part about the kid walking up to the NCAA official and telling him hello from Wes is pretty disturbing. That tells you everything you need to know about him and how powerful he really is and how serious the NCAA isn&8217;t about cleaning up therecruiting game when it comes to their cash cows.

He pretty much gave the guy the finger and wanted Gary Parish to know he could do it and get away with it.

Sick

total bull&8230; IMO agents shouldnt be allowed to be anywhere near potential recruits.

Halfway through the video I said to myself, &8220;This kid is a ing sophomore?&8221; This is the type of kid I&8217;m really happy to see get such an early offer.

Lord knows how many VHS&8217; ole Kragthorpe will be buying with that kind of change.

I wasnt asked to catch the ball and go out in the flats and run routes, because that wasnt how our offense was, Lawrence Vickers said. Now people are lying and people think I cant catch. I guess I shouldnt have started knocking people out.
